This week our toddlers learned about washing dishes! Within each day there are many opportunities for children to learn and help with the upkeep and care of their classroom. Washing dishes is an important practical life activity that involves the children in daily tasks. The child is presented with small child sized dishes, a tub with water and soap, a scrubbing brush, and a towel. They learn to create bubbles in the soapy water, then use the scrubbing brush to get the dirt off of the dish. When the dish looks clean they then dry it nicely with a towel and move onto the next. This activity helps them develop concentration and sequencing skills, works on their control of movement, and provides an abundance of independence.
